10 Stress Relieving Tips For Special Educators December 8, 2010 at 7:41 am

Special educators have stressful jobs. You never know what a day might entail and you have to be able to handle it all. And after it is all handled then you need to deal with the stress that the situation made you feel.

Keep Breathing

This first stress relieving tip is to keep breathing. Make sure that you take deep breaths throughout the day. Take more when you are stressed. This is one of the easiest ways to relieve some stress.

Know Your Students

Another stress reliever, believe it or not, is to know your students. When you know your students you will be able to tell when a behavior is normal and nothing to worry about and when you need to take action. There is no need to stress out over behaviors that are just part of a student’s normal routine.

Keep Work At Work

This is easier for some people than others but keeping work at work is great for decreasing stress. You may have to face challenges at work but you don’t need to be talking or thinking about them when you’re not at work.

Focus On The Positive

There will be good points during the day and there will be challenges. Decide how to handle challenges, do it, and then move on. Spend the majority of the time focusing on every big, or little, accomplishment.

Set Reasonable Goals

Don’t try to do more than you are capable of or push students past what they are capable of. Know both your limits and respect them. Reasonable goals are attainable. Unreasonable goals are frustrating, discouraging, and not a good idea.

Focus On The Effort

You can’t focus on the outcome in special education, or in life for that matter. You just need to focus on the effort that you put into everything you do. If you put forth your best effort into anything then consider that task a success no matter what the overall outcome might be.

Have A Support Network In Place

When you need help at work or away from work then have places where you can get it. Make sure that you have people already volunteering to support you before you need support. And have a few people to go to in case some are busy.

Ask For Help When You Need It

This needs to be a separate tip because people don’t like asking for help. Whether you need advice, assistance, or just someone to talk to, seek out that help. Don’t try to tough it out yourself and don’t wait until you are completely frazzled. Learn to relieve stress before it builds up to the danger levels.

Keep Things In Perspective

Nothing is the end of the world but the end of the world. Problems will happen. They will pass. In the grand scheme of things nothing is that big of a deal.

Let Things Go Quickly

This is a great stress reliever. Choose to let go of things that stress you out. Let go of the stressful morning. Forget the nonstop problems you had yesterday. Let it go and be a calmer, more relaxed, happier person for it.
